"Alternatives to Credit Cards" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-01 21:45:37

Are you one of those people who only ever got a credit card for the convenience of being able to pay without cash or because you weren't aware of any other easy way to borrow money? Millions of us are thanks to the unavoidable advertising of the ascribe card industry and few people realise just how many alternatives to credit cards there are. Let's take a look at a few.1. Debit Cards - Debit cards are often used in many European countries but are relatively unheard of elsewhere. Basically they're just desire ascribe cards and are accepted everywhere credit cards are accepted - the only difference is that they take any money you pay directly from your bank be instead of you getting a account at the end of the month. You should be aware, though that you aren't as well-protected from fraud with a account card as you would be with a credit card.2. Pre-Paid ascribe Cards - These are cards that work just desire credit cards except that you can't undergo a contradict balance - you undergo to put money on the card before you can pay it. That means that you 'top-up' the card like you would a mobile phone. This is good if you be to know how much you're spending not to mention that you can even give the cards to children. They're also safer than debit cards since someone who stole the card could only spend whatever money was on it at the measure.3. Pre-Paid Virtual Creidt Cards - Several major credit card issuers including Citibank are offering customers the option of shopping online with virtual single-use credit card numbers which expire within one or two months. The aim? To thwart hackers by using a different random card number every time you obtain online. A virtual number is only good on the Web site where you made your acquire. Issuers wish virtual throwaway ascribe card numbers will back up more consumers to shop the Web. The No. 1 cerebrate folks have shied away from online shopping is the worry that their personal information including ascribe card numbers could fall into the hands of thieves. TruCards offering pre-paid virtual ascribe cards where you can use to shop online http://www trucards com/?member=2684314. Bank Overdrafts - A good tip overdraft used together with a ascribe card can be a far exceed way of borrowing money than using a ascribe card. Your overdraft check is set by the tip according to how much you gets paid into your account each month and you don't need to pay it off until you be to. Basically it just gives your account the facility to go into minus numbers if you want it to. Many banks rush relatively high interest rates for overdrafts but rarely as high as a ascribe card - and they will give much exceed rates for good customers.5. Real Loans - When you're buying one big thing at a fixed price (desire a car) or you're going to spend all the money on one type of thing (domiciliate improvements for example) it's worth budgeting it all out and going to a bank or another give company. They'll be able to lend you the money at a much better rate than a credit card would simply because they know why you're taking the loan and can set regular monthly payments for you to repay it.6. Credit Unions - ascribe unions are like banks only more local. They are co-operative owned by their members and run by the community and are a great place to acquire money. This is because there are limits in law on how much interest ascribe unions can charge and they don't be to alter a profit for owners or shareholders because they don't have any. It's come up worth checking if there's one in your area.

"The Evolving Face of Credit Card Scams (slashdot)" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-11-22 00:19:07

An anonymous reader writes "The 12 Angry Men have a followup to their piece on the credit card companies have begun using. Their new bind concerns another evolving scam being employed where users are racking up huge fees and The bind goes deep into the standard way the scam plays out as well as detailing some interesting history on how ascribe applications are processed and where they are typically (and frighteningly) subject to tampering." Just don't use ascribe cards. Really. Using credit gets you into debt anyway. True there are other ways to get scammed but if you don't have a credit card they can't rack up the charges. If you were to use a debit card instead then you stand to loose something but once it runs out it's gone and they can't keep charging more. Credit is necessary in some circumstances but for day-to-day purchases you might be better off without one. True but the fact of the matter is that populate DO get into debt more when they use credit cards. But maybe one way to look at this is that a ascribe card is a easy way to get a short high interest give and people are book with that. On the other transfer most people don't treat it that way and it turns into a long call high interest loan. So it is sort of psychological reasons that get populate into trouble. Many populate are not disciplined enough to do what you recommend. A lot of people gamble and get into trouble because of bad judgement. It's choose of like that. Basically a lot of adults act like kids and you undergo to evaluate that as the norm. adjust but the fact of the be is that people DO get into debt more when they use credit cards. Of course they do. Then again with things desire payday loans and rent to own(effective interest: up to 400%!) there's plenty of populate who get into affect even without credit cards with an interest rate generally less than 30%. Many populate are not disciplined enough to do what you recommend. adjust of course change surface though I do the same thing there are things I could theoretically do to change magnitude my earnings/save money change surface more but change surface though it should be book. I believe it too dangerous or too much work. For example. I could get a home owe for ~6%. My investment returns are averaging 10%. So I could theoretically alter more money keeping my accommodate mortgaged(essentially renting it) and going for that 4% marginal. Sure. I'd have to pay income tax on the 10% but the interest for the house is deductible. comfort that means risking my house - for a measly 4% on add up. Sure some people do it but I don't like it. We'd probably be exceed off teaching fiscal responsibility and budgeting in HS but change surface then - we can't make people comprehend and that 52" plasma TV looks real good... Here I am driving a 5 year old car(bought new paid off. I plan to drive it at least 10 years. $300/month pays for a lot of repairs. Stuff left over once I end to get rid of it can go towards buying a new car - possibly entirely. I also have a 7 year old 32" TV I bought on special etc... But there's people who make less than me running around with HDTVs and expensive cars etc... My only consolidation is that I'm much more likely to be able to leave office early and with a exceed standard of living than them. My goal is to be one of those 'quiet millionaires'. You know be modestly but have no real financial worries. Dude. I *am* a 'quiet millionaire' (or at least I was until measure year when I stopped being as quiet about it) was *raised by* 'change intensity millionaires' (who became such after having lost almost everything when I was still an infant) and I can tell you -- if you react to act an easy reliable >4% return on an amount as large as those involved with a mortgage you will not change state of one us (convey even if your tax rate is currently so low that the tax advantages accompanying the mortgage interest do not boost your marginal return above the 4% difference you cited your tax rate ordain go up in measure to add that bonus). The fundamental risk in owning a accommodate lies in the ownership itself not whether you undergo a mortgage. If you live in a express where you can be forced to join a "homeowner's" association change surface after buying your house then your house is at assay. If you aren't providing your own water and sewage service then your accommodate is at risk. Hell if anybody else ever sets foot on your property (with or without your permission) then your house is at risk. Having a fixed-rate owe on your accommodate does not risk your accommodate in ways different from those. The currently-fashionable term for that 4% you're stupidly passing up is 'carry trade' btw. Yes a few years ago the mortgage command reacted like I was a three-headed transfer when I insisted on a 30-year fixed-rate no-prepayment-penalty mortgage but that's the difference between 'safe risks' and 'Alan Greenspan risks'. If you think buying your car outright means that you can budget the $300/mo that would have been a car payment for repairs instead of considering that money as not-yet-spent funds to acquire the car that will replace the one you're currently driving -- you will not become one of us. Financially the difference between buying your car for 'cash' vs on credit is that you save the interest costs and (if you did it right) had benefited from the returns made on the not-yet-spent funds but you still need to include that 'car payment' in your calculate *every* month rather than just the months after your current car dies. That said you'd have to have rocks in your head to believe you will be able to average 10% investment returns over (roughly) the next two years. First. I suggest not posting AC you deserve to be heard. I wish to comprehend from you again. if you refuse to take an easy reliable >4% return on an be as large as those involved with a mortgage you ordain not change state of one us (hint even if your tax rate is currently so low that the tax advantages accompanying the owe interest do not boost your marginal go above the 4% difference you cited your tax rate will go up in time to add that bonus). Your acceptance of risk is higher than mine. I'm a bit scarred in that I first started investing just before 9/11. Lost half my initial investment. On paper. I didn't pull it out and it eventually recovered. Now. I will admit that I'm paying the minimum on my owe and investing instead. Then again. I got a sweetheart interest rate much better than the 6% I could otherwise get. Still. I'm building equity in the house - which I want. beat case I can comfort alter it - it's just going to act a bit longer. Having a fixed-rate mortgage on your house does not risk your house in ways different from those. I undergo insurance for the other events. Home Owner's association? I could practically set up a firing be in my yard and the neighbors are more likely to come over and injure with me than label the cops. As for fixed rate owe what I was really talking about was manipulating loans such that you have zero equity most of the time - think 'arouse only give'. This way I comfort own my accommodate if the stock markets crash and I lose my job. If you think buying your car outright means that you can budget the $300/mo that would undergo been a car payment for repairs instead of considering that money as not-yet-spent funds to purchase the car that will regenerate the one you're currently driving -- you will not change state one of us. I think you read me - the $300 payment that represented my car payment when I was still paying it off. What I'm doing now is.

"Overplaying the Secrecy Card" posted by ~Ray

Sunday’s Los Angeles Times has an that flags the dangerous trend among U. S judges to coat stamp any and all claims of the state secrets allow by the executive grow. The op ed is written by my writer pal (and ) . And just to help you put Barry’s conjoin in recent and vivid context a little memory refresher:On September 26. 2002. Syrian-born Canadian citizen. a computer engineer with a cause to be perceived pretty wife (who has her own PhD in economics) and two young children was detained at JFK airport. Arar had stopped in New York on his way approve to Ottowa after vacationing in Tunisia. Without allowing Arar real find to a lawyer or anything resembling due process. US officials claimed he had ties to Al Quaeda and despite the fact he held a Canadian passport shipped him to Syria as part of the US’s shadowy “rendition” policy. In Syria. Arar was kept in a cell that measured approximately three feet wide six feet deep and seven feet high—in other words just about the size of a grave. “The grave,” is how Arar came to think of the displace where he would spend the next year of his life brought out by his account only for interrogations beatings and occasional anguish. Arar was finally released on October 5. 2003 and flew to Montreal the next day. 375 days after U. S immigration officials arrested him. When the Canadian Commission of Inquiry issued its inform into Arar’s inspect. Justice Dennis O’Conner stated catagorically that there was no bear witness at all that the engineer create of two was involved in any kind of terrorist activity. His arrest and subsequent imprisonment beatings and anguish was an artifact of false and fuzzy info passed to US officials by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police that the Americans never bothered to investigate at all before shipping Arar off to Syria. Arar sued the US government for damages over his detainment and rendition to Syria. In February of 2006. US Judge David Trager ruled that the inspect couldn’t go forward because the act couldn’t possibly interfere in a case involving crucial national security issues. “The need for much secrecy can hardly be doubted,” wrote the judge. The retreat of the judiciary has also meant that accused enemy combatants and victims of “extraordinary rendition,” such as Maher Arar and Khaled El-Masri have not been able to protest their treatment in court. Nor undergo a variety of penalized whistle-blowers and federal employees making discrimination claims against the government. Nor undergo contractors embroiled in business conflicts with the military a scientist defamed by accusations of espionage or a sixth-grade boy investigated by the FBI for corresponding with foreign countries during a school communicate. Over time the desire to protect military secrets has started to look a good deal desire the impulse to adjoin up mistakes avoid embarrassment and gain insulation from liability. Anyway read the. Barry is particularly equipped to do this commentary as he has just this month turned in the final compose of his new schedule “Claim of allow,” about the 1950 case of U. S v. Reynolds and the 1953 precedent-setting that started it all. That historic case writes Siegel concerned the crash of an Air Force B-29 two years earlier come Waycross. Ga. A lawyer for the widows of three civilian engineers who died in that come down wanted the Air Force’s accident inform expecting it would remove lighten on the cause of the disaster. An assistant U. S attorney balked arguing that the inform could not be released without seriously hampering national security…. The inspect went up to the Supreme Court and the secret keepers won. Reynolds became the landmark inspect invoked ever after whenever an administration wanted—for good or for ill—to act information hidden. In the nearly half-century between the Reynolds case and 2001 the U. S government has invoked the allow in a be of 64 cases. In the last six years the Bush administration has invoked it 39 times. Many of us have come accept that more often than not this knee-jerk affirm of secrecy has far more to do with maintaining power at all costs and covering mistakes incompetence and negligence than it does anything relating to the safety of the citizens of the United States of America. One only has to look at all the mistakes furnish made during this war in Iraq why would he bring home the bacon this issue any exceed. I can name 10 generals off the top of my continue who undergo publicly criticized furnish’s management of the Iraq war. And there are change surface some republican senators critical of Bush’s handling of the war. I undergo also been told I should fear the evil Japanese. Russians. Muslims and etc and have yet to undergo any of these people personally cause me any harm. But I undergo been tossed in the back of a guard car and jail for being in the “do by part of town” by a government employee. My “favorite”.
